A note to my baby boy at 40 weeks and 3 days

Hey Peanut,

It's 6:27am. We're now three days post due date (honestly, a little unhappy about this) and today I've been up since 5. Woo. Before going to bed, I kept repeating to myself, " I'm going to go to sleep and get some rest. After a few hours I'll wake up with contractions or my water breaking". I said this to myself over and over hoping to make it happen. But apparently I got cut off after "After a few hours, I'll wake up...".

Oh well. I tried.

Turns out there's not much to do between the hours of 5 and 6 while tossing in bed, so I soon found myself doing what else but... Eating. (An apple and yogurt thank you very much). While sitting in our kitchen, our vintage globe Christmas lights glowing, I started to think. I started to think about you, the world, us and everything in between. Here's what I came up with:

  • I hope you're a child that can adapt well, because you're going to have 8,000 some names. Growing up, your Papa had a different name for me every other month, and I've passed that onto our pup Penelope, and now you. I guess that's just how we roll.
    • Side note: Fun facts about your momma's childhood, some of these names included: Wa-Wa-Willimena, Pod, Punkin, Peaches, Spudley...etc. You can ask him for more.
  • You will be born into a pretty crazy world soon, but you'll be ok. You've got a lot of people in your corner kiddo, and for that you're lucky. We're lucky.
  • Patience is a virtue, but good luck with that. Now I'm not talking about waiting in line at the grocery store type patience, we'll definitely teach you that. I'm talking about the big stuff. The earth shaking, life molding stuff. If you figure out to exercise extreme patience when faced with that kind of enormity, you just may be the first. Right on. But if you don't, that's ok too. Just make sure you have the clarity to recognize those moments and wait them out as best you can. It's very rarely not worth it.
    • Side note: I haven't become a hypocritical parent just yet, though we're out of our minds anxious for you to come, we exert patience in most moments of most days ;)
  •  Your daddy and I were talking last night, about what we look forward to most about your arrival. Of course there's the holding you, kissing you, staring at you and all of those lovely things. But what we figured out, was that we can't wait to show you life. That's what we look forward to most. We can't wait to introduce you to new food from every country imaginable (ok, well maybe not every country, but pretty darn close), watch you hear and feel music for the first time, and giggle as you make a mess experimenting with paint. We can't wait to help you through new experiences, whether they be a little scary or the coolest thing you've ever seen. We can't wait to just be there. Be your guides, and be your support.

So hurry up and let's get on this, yeah?

We want to meet you so terribly, as do all your grandparents and aunts and uncles and neighbors and baby friends... Geeze. You're not even out of my belly and you're crazy popular, so don't keep the people waiting much longer, ok? Ok.

Love,
Momma

Pretty Little Things Thursdays: For Baby (On Sunday)

Geez.

We reached 39 weeks yesterday and things have been a little nuts. I'm beyond ready for this little boy to come out, my KaLaLu frames and such are doing awesome at Wolfbait, Komoda and Eclecticity which means I'm working non-stop, and I've been experiencing some crazy pregnant lady nesting as of late. So our apartment? Rocked it.

With all this goin on, I've been slacking on the blogging front. I sort of wish Blogger had a better app so I could do more on my phone. I can handle Twitter and Instagram because they're right there...but every time I click the little Blogger icon, I sort of want to throw my phone towards the nearest pool of water.

So, I'm putting up  a "Pretty Little Things Thursday" post now, on Sunday. Here it goes...

What's new...

-We're at 38 weeks today, and practically counting every second. We'd like our baby now please...
-I'm really excited about KaLaLu's sales lately. I've been mixing my handmade items with fun vintage finds on Etsy, and I'm having to constantly re-stock the shops we're in locally. So grateful to everyone who likes our stuff!
-We had a nice Thanksgiving with family. I ate lots of potatoes, stuffing and gravy. So good.
-Chicago is getting wintery...and I refuse to buy a coat that will only last me a few weeks at most. So my belly gets cold a lot.
-I'm infamous for catching onto shows after they're canceled...in the spirit of this, I'm obsessed with Medium. What can I say, I'm a binge episode watcher.
-And that's about all that's goin on here. Sorry, I'm a little link happy today :)

 What's new with you?
Hope everyone had a lovely holiday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

37 week walk

Yesterday we hit the 37 week mark. The ninth month of pregnancy, the full term point and the true final stretch. It's in these moments, that it's sinking in, we're going to be parents forever.

There's no way we can understand just how much our minds will be blown when this little man enters the world, but we're starting to make some guesses. We're looking at my belly trying to picture the little person that's grown. We're glancing at his bed imagining a little swaddled burrito sleeping (or more realistically crying) next to us. He'll be here before we know it. So, even though I'm horribly uncomfortable and wanting to sleep all the time, Joey and I are trying to spend these last moments together, reminiscing about who we've been as individualsas a couple and how we'll evolve once mama and daddy are added to our titles.

Veggie Chili Recipe

First off, let me tell you....it's real hard to make chili look pretty in pictures. So my apologies... Also as a warning, I'm not the type that measures things out, but for the sake of putting recipes here, I'm trying!

So, I was inspired to make this dish for our friends who just had their baby, and happen to be vegetarian. Joey and I will occasionally make a meat free meal, but not terribly often, so I had to think hard for a hearty, new mama approved meal. And I think I got it! I'm really happy with how this turned out (so was Joey), using lots of great veggies, meatless hamburger patties and a tomato base.

You'll Need:
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 yellow pepper
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 zucchini
  • 12oz package of frozen corn (or fresh if its in season)
  • 2 cans of kidney beans
  • 1 can of black beans
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1 28oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • 2 1/2 tsp Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Paprika
  • 1 cup water
  • Few tablespoons of Olive oil
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Optional: 3 Meatless burger patties

I started off dicing half of a large onion, mincing the garlic and sauteing the two on medium heat in a large pot.

While those were cooking, I chopped my peppers and zucchini into small-ish pieces. Once the onions in the pot were becoming translucent, I added these chopped veggies plus the frozen corn and let the delicious smells fill the kitchen. (Saute for around 3 minutes).

Once all the veggie flavors blend, I added my chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, paprika, and my secret ingredient: cinnamon.

Add the diced tomatoes, beans and tomato paste. After emptying the can of tomato paste, fill with water, add to the pot, and stir well.

To make the chili a little heartier, I decided to use Organic Sunshine brand meatless burger patties. They are gluten free, and their first ingredient is sunflower seeds which add awesome nutrients to the dish, as well as give it a little more substance. If you choose to use meatless (or meatfull) burgers, defrost, crumble and add to the pot.

Simmer on medium/low heat for 30 minutes stirring occasionally. About half way through, I added a cup of water, to give the chili a little more movement.

Is it done? Test it out! Are the beans cooked all the way through? Does it have a super good, balanced taste, or does it need a pinch of salt? At this point its up to you. Add hot sauce, sour cream, and/or cheese and you're good to go!

Enjoy!

I love orange. It's bright, fun and in my opinion a severely underrated color. So, to give this unsung lovely a little appreciation, I'm dedicating this week's "Pretty Little Things" to all things orange!

Baby Growin' and Pumpkin Pickin'

Goebberts

So, we went to Goebberts this weekend with my parents and my in-laws. We used to go here when I was little, but hadn't been in years. Crazy how things have changed! Anyways, we're starting the tradition again for the bebe, beginning in utero. I'm going to dig up an old photo of me next to the "How Tall This Fall" sign in the next couple of days to compare. Here are some photos from the day...

I was a blue pumpkin...second biggest...great.

I fed a giraffe!
Their eyes are so pretty, and their tongues are so weird.

Eclecticity: KaLaLu is in a new shop!

Chicago, IL 60625

This shop is in the heart of Lincoln Square, and as the sign states, they have something for everyone, and now, KaLaLu frames, magnets and candle holders can be found here too! We're thrilled to be working with Siri and her crew.

In other news, we're crazy busy pumping out products before little man comes! I can't believe we're three weeks away from full term...

Yes, yes he could come anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 weeks...the lovely "full term range", but I can't even start to fathom being pregnant for 8 more weeks. He's dropped...and he's made it known. Sigh. We'll see. All I can do is truck on with KaLaLu, keep the house clean, continue to cook food to freeze and beg this little growing person to be ready soon.

Love, Chicago

Sometimes being stuck somewhere can be a good thing. I was waiting for Joey to pick me up after a last minute midwife appointment yesterday, where I was becoming increasingly bored and focused on my preggo discomfort.

That's when I looked across the street at the lake, and thought, well shit, this is probably the last warm day we'll have in Chicago this year...I should explore! So I did. And these are the photos....
