“I have learned that to be with those I like is enough”

                                                         -Walt Whitman

This weekend was great. It was busy, as all weekends are now; but it took on that wonderful in the moment, slow motion feel.

We didn't have a crazy party. We didn't have some big adventure that ended with epic stories. We had brunch with good friends, and hung out with family at my cousin's little league game.

This weekend (and many before) has made me reflect on how incredibly lucky I am to have so many people love my baby. He's so loved. There's so much love all around.

I'm the second oldest in the line of cousins. These two have always been the babies, and we've always been the big cousins. Seeing them become the big cousins and holding my baby....I can't even explain.

Oscar looks up to these boys already. I think they kinda like him too.

I can't wait to see all the fun things they'll teach him.

We've got so many wonderful people in our life. We have so much beautiful family.
I'll stay with those I like, I like them all.

You played a great game kiddo, I'm so proud of you.

Top 6 Baby Products at 7 Months

  1. My little bug has a fairly, uh, barren head. His little fuzzy noggin' is the cutest, but unfortunately fuzz doesn't block sun rays very well, so summer hats are a must. These little canvas bucket hats are adorable and extremely affordable!
  2. This thing has been really great. We don't have room for a full size highchair in our city apartment, so this has been perfect. I also love it versatility. We've used it from 4 months, and will be able to use it when he just needs a booster.
  3. These were gifted to us from my sister-in-law, and they've saved us in many messy situations. They have a wipe-able surface which makes things 10 times easier for travel and use at home. Just don't put them in the dryer. It's not pretty.
  4. Ergo Baby carriers are a no-brainer. They're amazing and helpful and everyone loves them. Simple as that.
  5. Sunscreen is a tough topic. It's scary to put something on your Little's skin that we so commonly associate with chemicals. But, there are a few great brands out there, that cut out all of the unnecessary stuff and keep the sun protection goodness. One of my favorites has been BabyGanics spray sunscreen. It's easy to use and isn't thick and sticky like many others, which makes the process of application a whole lot more pleasant.
  6. Books that cannot be destroyed. Brilliant. These baby books are "chew-proof, drool-proof and rip proof". We're collecting the whole series!

Those are my favorites for this month. I swear by them, because I use them. Happy baby shopping!

Even crazier, 6 of you have the chance to win an e-voucher worth $20 towards frames from this collection. This means you can pick frames like these or these and just pay the cost of shipping.

Just to add a little extra sweetness to this deal, Firmoo is offering a free set of frames plus free shipping to one reader if we hit 40 entries! So please spread the word to up the stakes.

A Note to my Baby Boy: You're 7 Months Old!

I almost feel unprepared to write this. Each month goes by faster and faster; they're starting to blur. You're getting so big and strong my baby boy. You amaze me every day.
I think the biggest thing to report is....you figured out how to crawl! It's exciting and terrifying all at once. I'm so proud of you. But even more so, I'm happy for you. You were getting so frustrated seeing a toy just out of reach and not being able to get it yourself. You're becoming so independent!
You're really interested in plants. You focus in on one, and have to touch it. You're adorably gentle though :)

I just know you'll be walking in a blink of an eye. I've been holding your hands while your standing, and you're little feet know what to do!

You're pretty darn good for whomever holds you, but you're growing increasingly aware of being away from your Daddy or me.

You have two little chompers. Super cute.

You're so good with new foods. Even if you don't love it, you'll try a few more bites. You make the most hysterical faces though.

You've always had this sense of silliness, but I clearly saw that you're developing your sense of humor the other day. You wouldn't take your passi, so I said "Fine I'll take it" and put it in my mouth. You thought it was hilarious! (I'll take the laughs while I still can!)

I miss you when you go to sleep for the night my sweet love. I've come to realize that motherhood is an existence of feeling every emotion there is, at all times. During the day I long for a second to take a shower, but then I crave holding you at night. I'm thrilled that you're learning how to move around on your own, but that means there are more ways you could get hurt. I love that you're excited to explore this big world, but I worry that the sweet, still, cuddly moments are dwindling.

There will be a lifetime of these conflicted feelings, and though it's a little scary, I can't wait.

I'll eat you up I love you so.

Food and the City: Dunlays on the Square

We've been here a few times now. It's one of those places where even picky eaters can find something they'd like. Their menu has most standard American dishes (burgers, sandwiches and mac n' cheese). Honestly, this restaurant is not my all time favorite. I'm more partial to its cousin "The Smoke Daddy" in Wicker Park, but they do have good food at decent prices.

Joey had: Lobster and Shrimp Roll. He enjoyed it. I think he liked their flat-bread and salads from past visits a little more than this, but there were no complaints.

Nyssa had: Blackened Fish. I'm a big fan of this dish, though the blackened seasoning is technically from The Smoke Daddy. It's a lovely accent to the Tilapia, and I love their remoulade sauce. Grilled asparagus makes the meal perfect.

Oscar had: A few tastes of asparagus. He dug it.

Our friends had: Margherita Flatbread and the Brussel Sprout Salad. One friend was skeptical of the flat-bread, but ended up really happy with it. The other friend is vegetarian and appreciated having a couple of options to order.

Pro's: Decent Parking (mostly metered), Full Bar, Patio Seating, and space for large tables.

Con's: Last time we were there, we had a ridiculously rude waitress. We understand that it's a tough job and always make sure to show our gratitude, so we were surprised by her coldness. I haven't held this against the restaurant though, since we have had other great servers and special attention from the manager in regards to my gluten intolerance.

Gluten Free info: This is not the best place for gluten free food. There's only a couple of choices, but its definitely do-able.

Our Home: Oscar's Room

I finally got Oscar's room cleared out (for the second time). It so sweet to see him playing on the floor in his own room. We loved our last apartment, but it had its flaws. One huge flaw was the poor insulation that made newborn Oscar's room freezing. Though I decorated the room with love and excitement for my baby-to-be, sadly it never truly became his room. The only time he slept in it (in 5 months), happened to be the end of our moving day while we crazily stayed until 1am cleaning and moving the last boxes.

So as you might guess, I was thrilled to make him a real nursery. I painted stripes one by one, drilled holes and hung shelves, and almost neurotically placed each knick-knack and book in their rightful place.

Here it is! (You can see it before we moved here, and the progress of stripes here)
