Toddler Gift Guide Holidays 2014

The holidays are getting close, a little too close for comfort in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love holidays. I dream of the scent of fresh cut Christmas trees, twinkly lights and hot chocolate....but when I start to think about gifting, things get a little crazy. While I'd love nothing more than to be able to make gifts for those I love, time isn't really on my side these days. So, I'm making lists of great handmade (by someone else) items that I know my family and friends will love, and would like to share them with you! All of these finds are from Etsy with links to their shops below. I figure if we're going to do the whole presents thing, we should support small business, right?

kalalu news and upcoming markets

The last few months I have been in a vortex of legos, booth fees, and scholarly journals, and I'm surfacing just for a second to write this (then going right back into the spinning). Balancing going back to school, staying home with Oscar and working on KaLaLu has been challenging to say the least, but these are all really good things....so I'll stop whining!

Anyways, I'd like to share upcoming KaLaLu shows with you guys!  I've had a lot of fun with markets this year, and have found some awesome local artists! Here's whats up:

A Note to my Baby Boy: You're One and a Half! (half a month late)

Oscar,

First off, you're welcome for this photo which will clearly be the cover of your first acoustic album.

You are a hilarious little boy (little boy?!?!).

You have an awesome sense of humor, and have a way of bringing out the silly in anyone.

You have legs for days. You're basically 8 feet tall already.

You have 60+ words in your arsenal.
Some of your pronunciations are questionable, but you get darn close.

The other day you said your first two word sentence, and it was pretty epic.
"Cute Gaga (Dada)"
Gaga was wearing one of your hats, and you thought it looked great :)

You know your head, chest, nose, eyes, ears, teeth, hands and arms in Spanish. You know a few other words in Spanish too, but those are your best.
(you also still only refer to water as aqua which I love)

You're fascinated by things. You exclaim "wow!" or "whoa!" when you see something interesting.
It is truly amazing looking at the world through your eyes, so thank you.
You've sparked something in me I haven't seen in a while.

You love going on "hawks" (walks).
You have a stick obsession.

You call dogs "god" which freaks some passers by out.

You have been bonkers over ambulances for the last few months.
You also love fire trucks, but according to you they're actually ambulances.

Oh my dear, you have developed quite a bit of sass. Quite a lot a bit.

You are very clear when you want something, and are not afraid to share your frustration when you don't get your way.

You've also developed this sometimes adorable, sometimes hazardous habit of clinging to our legs....especially while in the kitchen.
And you've got a grip! Kid, sometimes I straight cant get your little arms off.

But even with all this uh...interesting new behavior, you are the sweetest little pumpkin.
You love "ugs" (hugs) and never hold kisses back.

Sometimes you'll be playing and just decide to get up and give me a kiss. And my heart explodes.

You have a new friend and his name is Boo Boo.
We called him Mr. Bear, but you decided that didn't suite him.

Babe, you share so well!
I know it's most likely going to be short lived and we'll go through the "mine" phase,
but for now you're a sharing champ.

You have so many teeth.

You've been boycotting a lot of food lately. You used to eat anything, but I can't blame you.
Learning free-will must be a pretty cool thing.

You still love reading! Your current favorites are:
"The Bear Snores On"
"Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late"
"I Am a Bunny"
"Goodnight Moon"

You love Pharrell's song 'Happy'. Every time I put it on you dance. You've got some moves.

Every day I am so proud of you.
Every day I wonder how I got so lucky to be your Mama.
Every day you make me a better person.
I love you to the moon and back a billion times over.

-Mama

What's coming up with KaLaLu

We had a great time this weekend at Skokie's Spring Greening Fair. We managed to get there on time, I met some lovely people, and made a few sales to boot!

(As a note, to anyone who stopped by our booth, please visit our Etsy Shop to save 10% off your order!)

We had so much fun in Skokie that we're doing a similar fair in Park Ridge on May 3rd! I'll follow up with more information once we get a little closer, but thought I'd mention it.

But before that, I'll be at Local Goods on April 26th teaching a class on how to make recycled record sleeve magnets, perfect for Springtime (if we ever get a real Spring that is).

Busy Busy Busy. But the good kind of busy.

New at KaLaLu

Hey all!

So, I'm late with my monthly Oscar post. Again. But, I am working on some crafty posts, and have a few recipes to share. Please, bear with me!

In the meantime, I wanted to show some new KaLaLu products we have up in the shop. I've been slowly adding new cities, and will soon have more votives and frames available!

Don't see your city? Let me know!
Or, create your own custom magnet set, as many cities as you'd like!

Toddler Bites (food that is...)

Hi there. It's me, 'that lady with the food'. At least I'm pretty sure that's my new name based off my sons recent behavior. Mr. Oscar has turned into a ravenous little food monster, constantly wanting to eat. Ok, maybe thats a bit much, but this kid can seriously eat.

It was bound to happen, my husband and I love food. I mean, we really love food. I'm not fond of the word 'foodie' but if it could mean: two fairly broke people who love cooking and making crazy delicious food, I'd be willing to reconsider. We're the type of 'foodies' who find decadence in a small, somewhat shady looking, hole in the wall on the West Side of Chicago that makes mind-blowing chicken tacos. Mmm...now I'm obsessing over those tacos...

ANYWAY, when we found out we were pregnant, we had most of the normal conversations about what our baby would look like, and what kind of parents we wanted to be. But maybe unlike some, one of the top 5 things we were excited about, was hitting the point where our little boy ate real food. But when that time came, I completely froze. I spent hours on google looking for new mushy meal ideas, with only a few purees to show for it. I found it really helpful seeing recipes to inspire a dish (like I normally do), but found it really difficult to find straight forward daily meal plans that seemed practical. Now I'm not saying they're not out there, I just think there should be more examples.

So, after figuring a few things out, here I am. I've decided to jot down what we're feeding our sweet little food vacuum, not only for my own reference, but to hopefully help out some Mama's that feel a little burnt out on the same old dishes.

My disclaimer:

  • I'm not a nutritionist or a doctor. I'm just a Mama hoping to avoid a 'chicken nuggets or death' situation with my kid. We'll see what happens...
  •  Oscar's 13 months, so some of the food I list may not be ideal for your babe if they're younger or have special dietary needs.
  • You'll notice, you wont see much gluten. It's not that I'm keeping Oscar away from it, I just keep a gluten free kitchen at home after being labeled Celiac four years ago. If we're out, he eats it. If we're home, not so much. Believe me, I'm 100% for people eating gluten when they can eat gluten, so this boy isn't missing out.
  • All of the food I list usually takes 10 minutes or less. I've been trying to prep some things the night before to make things easier for lunch and dinner the next day, and it's really helped. It's amazing what a difference cutting up some veggies or shredding cheese ahead of time makes.

Valentines Day Gift Guide: For Her

I love every one of these, and think many ladies would agree! Simple, sweet and romantic.
(Yes, nail polish can show love too... I think it's very romantic when my husband gives me a baby break so I can paint my nails!)

Another plus to these picks? All of these (oops...except Essie) are made by small business,
so you can share the love with them this Valentines Day too!

A Note to My Baby Boy (mini)

I really meant to keep up the monthly posts about Oscar, but this month I apparently didn't have my sh*t together and now it's kind of late. I've had a lot of fun writing these and love having special moments documented, so I'm hoping to keep it going in some degree. My plan for now is to do mini updates here and there, then do the big photo session posts for landmark ages like 18 months, 2 years, etc.

13 Months (ish)

You can locate your: head, nose, toes and tongue.
You also know where my belly button is, but wont admit you have one yourself.
You can say: Mama, Dada, Hi, Hello, Bye,
Bye bye, Cookie, Up, Hot, Baba, and Papa.
You're very vocal lately. You've been testing volume and pitch.
 Poor Penelope's ears.
You love to take out every toy you own....for no reason.
You will literally take a toy out, throw it to the side, and go in for the next. And repeat.
Silly kid.
You're a little comedian.

You love being around people, you truly shine.

You've been extra snuggly waking up from naps lately and I love it.

You go bonkers over books. You can sit for an hour straight reading.

Your favorite books lately are: Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Gorilla, Dear Zoo,
Little Blue Truck, and Peeka-Who?

You've been boycotting hats lately, and it'd kind of bumming me out.

I've been signing the song "Ho Hey" to you a lot the past couple of months. You now make my heart melt by asking to be held while I sing it, or when its on the radio. You gently rest your face against mine and snuggle in close while I sing, "I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart". I just teared up even writing about this.

You've loved looking at the ice that forms on the window.
The patterns are beautiful and you recognize that.

You've been pushing your limits with Penelope lately. Girl is a champ for some of the cheap shots you get in. For example, you've learned that she'll follow your hand when you move it while holding food. You've decided this is fun. You also like to just walk up to her and say, stick your finger up her nose, or tickle her toes. Again, girl is a champ.
(you really do love her, you're just fascinated by her)

Goodness you're fun. You're exhausting and fun and beautiful and amazing and more than I could have ever imagined.

I love every ounce of you, with every ounce of me.
